Middle school is rarely an easy time, but it's particularly difficult for Logan (Malcolm Stumpf) in this coming-of-age film set in the 1980s. He has the requisite unrequited crush--but the object of his affection is a boy named Rodeo (Patrick White). Logan spends time with Rodeo and fellow outcast Joey (Max Paradise), but he's far from fitting in. His home isn't even a haven since his single mother (Fairuza Balk, PERSONAL VELOCITY) isn't sure what to do with her son. Logan continues to grapple with his feelings of attraction for his friend as he determines who he is. Though it shares a setting and theme with some of John Hughes's "Brat Pack" films, WILD TIGERS I HAVE KNOWN couldn't be farther from those 1980s classics. Though there are moments of humor, this is a dark and unconventional film that exposes the isolation of growing up as an outcast. In his first starring role, Stumpf carries the film well. He ably expresses Logan's desire--both for Rodeo and for acceptance. First-time-feature director Cam Archer also wrote, edited, and produced the film, and it's a unique offering. Though there is a plot running through it, flashes of Logan's daydreams give WILD TIGERS I HAVE KNOWN a close resemblance to an art film. This independent drama isn't for those devoted to blockbusters, but it gives a convincing look at how teens cross over from innocence to maturity.

OF A DIFFERENT STRIPE

February 28, 2007 -- CAM Archer is a 24-year-old with a future. At least that's the impression given by his first feature, "Wild Tigers I Have Known," which he wrote and directed. The low-low budget ($50,000) coming-of-age drama, shot on high-def video, is nothing if not daring and innovative.

Malcolm Stumpf, who played Madonna's son in 2000's "The Next Best Thing," stars as Logan, an androgynous, gender-confused (he loves wearing lipstick) 13-year-old living in a boring suburb in the rotary-phone era. "You're always off in another world," complains his mom (Fairuza Balk), but she's in another world herself.

Logan develops a crush on a cool male classmate, Rodeo (Patrick White), and takes to calling him on the phone pretending to be a woman named Leah. Rodeo falls for the trick (Leah is voiced by a real woman, Ruth Elliott) and sets up a meeting with his new admirer. Is he ever surprised when Leah turns out to be Logan!

Archer, a protégé of Gus Van Sant, has a surreal style that recalls the recent indies "Mysterous Skin" and "Tarnation." The story unfolds in an episodic pastiche of jump cuts, psychedelic sound effects and time-bending narration. At times, the visual and aural assault becomes overpowering (lighten up just a bit, dude); but overall "Wild Tigers I Have Known" is impressive.
